My Approach
Have you ever left a doctor's office feeling frustrated - with a diagnosis or treatment that just doesn't fit? Have you ever felt that the doctor didn't LISTEN to you? I know that's happened to me too many times to count. And for all their good intentions, knowledge and expertise, the treatment DIDN'T HELP because the doctor hadn't listened to learn what I actually needed.

I have learned that THE most important thing I do as a therapist is to LISTEN WITH EMPATHY. My goal is to be FULLY PRESENT WITH YOU and to LEARN YOUR PERSPECTIVE. You may have heard the proverb that goes something like, "You can't know someone until you walk in their shoes."
I want to see life from your shoes.

From this vantage point of understanding and respect, goals for treatment are clarified collaboratively. It is only when this understanding of WHO the client is and WHAT s/he WANTS that a determination of the treatment approach is made.

I have found that people and their situations are complex and seldom present with cookie-cutter concerns that fit into "one-size-fits-all" plans.
A person struggling with symptoms of PTSD, may also be having thoughts of suicide and experiencing difficulties in his or her intimate relationship. For this reason, I draw from a wide range of evidence-based tools that have been proven effective with specific issues and concerns. I select those tools that will be most beneficial for the individual, based on such factors as intellectual and verbal skills, level of insight, and type of concern. A person with intellectual disabilities may benefit from a more structured and behavioral focus than a college professor.
My approach is grounded in SOLUTION-BASED THERAPY with a strong emphasis in POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY, COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY (CBT), DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT) and their derivations.
I utilize SHORT-TERM SOLUTION-FOCUSED STRATEGIES designed to equip clients with skills to function successfully and independently, rather than encouraging dependency on the therapist.

No cookie-cutter plans. Just real, solution-focused strategies - tailored to YOU and your unique situation.
